Reading Log
I truly believe reading unlocks the key to learning. In our grade 1 classroom we read everyday; read alouds, shared reading, you name it! Students are also asked to read every-night for homework and to complete a reading log. I got this idea from my amazing master teacher Tracey Boucher, during my student teaching in a second grade classroom. She taught me how to conduct readers workshop, writers workshop, and just a love for reading in the classroom. Not only did she have her students read daily for homework, but they had to answer a comprehension question about the book each night. I have since modified the reading log to fit the learning standards for 1st grade in Saint Lucia.
Each student is given a reading log in a plastic bag, book talk questions and a book. Reading homework is Monday through Thursday. The reading log is returned to school daily, and students choose a new book that fits their reading level to take home. Below you will find a copy of the reading log and book talk questions. The reading log should be printed on US legal sized paper, and book talk questions on US letter sized paper.
